Cooperation with the Hortobágy National Park Directorate for sustainable future and reduction in our carbon footprint

EXIM Hírek

Our ESG and Sustainability Transactions Centre has signed a cooperation agreement with the Hortobágy National Park Directorate to jointly support the region’s nature conservation and development goals and further strengthen our efforts to achieve a greener future. Through this partnership, natural water conditions in the area can be improved, new habitats can be established, and we can contribute to the long-term preservation of Hortobágy’s unique ecosystem.

We are constantly seeking new opportunities to reduce our carbon footprint in a sustainable manner, as we believe that economic success can only be achieved in the long term when accompanied by responsibility towards the environment and society. As the next step in this endeavour, our ESG and Sustainability Transactions Centre, in collaboration with the Hortobágy National Park Directorate, has developed an innovative and natural solution that not only provides the carbon offsetting necessary for our company, but also plays an important role in preserving biodiversity. As a socially and environmentally responsible company, this partnership enables us to promote the protection of Hungary’s unique natural values.

As a result of our cooperation, the groundwater level can be improved on an area of nearly 200 hectares, and more than 26 hectares of new water areas can be created, contributing to the restoration of natural water flow and the renewal of marshes and wetlands in two iconic areas of Hortobágy, in Kecskeri-puszta and Malomháza. The work will help to preserve the region’s unique flora and fauna, improve the water balance of the land, and contribute to ensuring that the ecologically important Natura 2000 sites remain living, thriving parts of Hortobágy. In addition to improving water retention, the development will have a number of other beneficial effects: among other things, it will support the survival of the region’s steadily declining amphibian populations and promote the more efficient operation of nature conservation management processes.

The project is one of Hungary’s most valuable habitat restoration programs, which in the long term will strengthen the preservation of the unique ecosystem of the Hortobágy National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and support our carbon footprint reduction goals. In its 2024–28 strategy, EXIM Hungary stated its commitment to environmental and social sustainability, transparency and responsible corporate governance. We will continue to strive to ensure that ESG considerations are reflected in our strategic decisions and day-to-day operations.
